How can counseling help?
Caregiving can often be a profoundly joyful and meaningful experience. It can also be difficult. It can bring up long standing family issues relating to parents or to and among siblings. Caregiving can entail family members having to work together, making decisions about the future, finances, or how care should be provided. Mediation is often helpful to families as they try to work through some of the issues that surface during the caregiving process.
To individual caregivers, issues of guilt, depression, anger or resentment sometimes surface. Without someone to talk to caregivers can get lost in these feelings. Sometimes the result is abuse of the person that they love. Counseling  can  help you resolve these feelings and  find healthy and effective ways of coping.
For the elderly person, counseling can be a way to learn to cope with illness, aging or loss. They may not want to burden a spouse, or child but would welcome the opportunity to talk to someone. Counseling with older people can help them sort out their feelings and look at their options for the future, without pressure from family.
